August 29th

Today is a day to celebrate health with More Herbs Less Salt Day. Another holiday created by wellcat.com, now is the time to pick those fresh herbs from the garden and eat healthy.

Unfortunately all of my basil and mint is already finished for the year....but maybe I'll stop by the produce store and pick up some fresh rosemary for rosemary raspberry chicken tonight.

August 27th & 28th

I didn't post yesterday because I was celebrating my birthday! And lucky me I get to keep celebrating this evening with my family!  But enough of me...lets get to the holidays!

Yesterday the 27th was Just Because Day. I hope you did something  nice "just because" yesterday :)

Today, the 28th , is Race Your Mouse Day. my first thought was the poor mouse I found in the mouse trap this morning...

But that's not what this holiday is about. The people at Wellcat.com created this holiday. When you are waiting for a program to load on your computer, you can race your mouse around the icons on your desktop. You know that thing we all do, the impatient circles we make with the mouse ...that. Do it today.

Well folks, that's it for the weekend!  I need to get my bum into my studio and fill these orders!

Happy National Dog Day!!!  I love dogs! I have been around animals from the day I was born. We had so many family dogs growing up....Missy, Penny, Lucky, Buck, Abby, Josey, Sophie  I think that's all of them. The first dog that was mine was Dexter. He was one of Abby's babies, and the best dog I ever had. Then I also had his brother Colby. They both died right after Angel was born. Then there was a short period when I owned a neurotic shih tzu names Leo. After his crazy trip through the neighborhood that didn't end well....I got my Miniature Austrailian Shepherd Grace. She is amazing and I love her so much!

Also today is Womens Equality Day:
In 1971, after much work, and at the urging of U.S. Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY), Congress designated August 26 each year as“Women’s Equality Day.” This day was selected to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on August 26, 1920. This amendment granted women the right to vote.  This was the culmination of decades of effort by women suffragettes and other groups.  Their efforts dated back to first women’s rights convention in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York.

Good Morning and Happy Vesuvius Day... well I don't know that it's a "happy" holiday..it's more of a commemorating day. Vesuvius Day marks the date in 79 A.D. that Mount Vesuvius exploded.

August 24, 79 A.D. was an historic date for the world. This was the day that Mount Vesuvius erupted in a huge explosion. It was one of the largest volcanic explosions in recorded history.

This deadly volcano destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. They were buried by volcanic ash and pumice. An estimated 3,360 people died in the volcano's eruption.

Mount Vesuvius also exploded a second time in 1631. At that time, it killed approximately 3,500 people.

Agent P!

My son loves the cartoon Phineas and Ferb. And I must admit, I like it too. I think it is a very cute show with good and appropiate morals.

I got this pattern from my favorite animal pattern creator: funkyfriendsfactory

Using fleece in aqua and orange, I created Perry the Platypus!  also known as AGENT P!
of course, this guy is in his pet platypus mode...

i am going to enlarge the pattern, his little feet were not easy to work with so small

I just love making new animal friends!

August 23rd

As we enter into these last few weeks of summer, I have been feeling a little sad, as if this whole summer flew by so quickly that I have not gotten to do everything that I wanted to do! I seems like winter just drags on and on and the summer is over in a flash.   So today on Ride the Wind Day, I am going to take a little bit of time to enjoy todays summer breeze.

August 22nd

Good Monday Morning!  For some reason I woke up early today and have enjoyed the quiet house before anyone else got up....that didn't last long! Now that breakfast is on the table and the kids are watching Phineas and Ferb (I love that show) it's time to share with you todays holidays.

First is Be an Angel Day This day was created by Jayne Howard Feldman. She was inspired by actual angels' work in her life and wanted to encourage the world to be servants of God and be an angel to someone today.

The second holiday for August 22nd, is Tooth Fairy Day!

Angelinna doesn't like us to poke around in her mouth, even brushing her teeth is a process of singing songs and tricking her mouth to open up...so when her front teeth were loose two years ago,  she would not let me wiggle them. I would try to give them a little extra push when I was brushing them, but she wouldn't have it.  Finally they were both so loose that they were crooked, barely hanging in there!  So I gave her and apple, but she wouldn't take a bite.  I let her be and about 10 minutes later, I found a tooth in the middle of the living room floor!  I looked in her mouth, and sure enough one was out and the other was just hanging there...a couple minutes later I had a toothless grin looking at me. I loved it!  I can't wait until Ay loses his front teeth!

August 21st

On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be August 21.

So today celebrate those old folks in your life that have meant something to you!

At the risk of forgetting anyone, I won't name names, but to all my grandparents: you have each taught me something and I love you for it.

Lunch Bags!

On Wednesday my son will be starting his first day of pre-school. It's a full day program. Then one week later Angel will be starting her first day of 1st Grade...also full day!  I see lots of sewing time in my future!

Since both of the kids will be eating lunch at school, I wanted to make them some lunch bags!

I picked up the easy to follow pattern at Etsy in this shop.

I had picked up some dinosaur fabric for Ay's bag, but he wanted to use the pirate fabric that was left over from his birthday

I did his first, so when I did hers I decided that the pockets would be more useful on the inside of the pack, so I can stick a spoon or extra straw in there and it will stay clean until lunch time

The second time around I also added an extra large pocket on the back. Angel will be working on using her silverware correctly, so she will have lots of apple sauce and puddings in her lunch. I am going to put a slim package of wet wipes so her aides can get her cleaned up quickly.

I have plans to make some more bags in holiday prints so they can change it up a bit throughout the year.
But for their first days, they are both set and ready for lunch time at school!

August 19th

Today we celebrate the birthday of Orville Wright...the holiday came to be in 1939 when Franklin D. Roosevelt declared today to be National Aviation Day!

I have one cousin who has recently earned his pilots license to fly small private planes and another cousin who is finishing up flight school in the military as we speak!

I personally have only been on a plane for one trip..and that was 6 years ago. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.   I suppose there would be a difference if I was flying first class or something!

I found this toy plane made here in the Pacific North West in Portland OR!  I always love NW crafting!

I have plans to make a brand of upcycled products from vintage clothes that I find at thriftshops and yardsales. Giving new life to old unwanted clothes.   But then again, that's on a list of ideas that is 20 miles long!!

Stop in at your local thriftshop and see what kind of treasures you can find, and if you don't have time to go out, just check out what you can find on Etsy!

Well, I missed yesterday but it was a good one so I want to make up for it by posting a weekend post.

A Crafty Brainstorm

So now that the wedding is over, I can start to concentrate on upcoming shop products.  Halloween is of course the number one priority on my list. I need to finish the new costume line so I can set up a photo shoot and get them listed.

But the other thing on my mind are the craft shows I have coming up this fall. I need to have some new small products to have at my craft booths:  brain storm time!

felt masks - simple felt masks on ribbon to tie on.
felt crowns - i have had these in the past, they sold okay
photobooth props - mustache and smiles on sticks
plush black cats (for halloween)
felt food play sets

the rest of my to do list:
make all that flannel stacked up into bathrobes
finish the wings I have cut out
tie more tutus
make more brown and gold dogs
get buttons to finish the new coffee cozies

plus I want to launch my new dog accessory shop in January...which includes
collars
show sheets
dog beds
small dog clothes

I just need to mulitply myself by 100 to finish all these things!

August 12th

Today is a holiday that I can't really celebrate. I only have one sibling, my husband only has one sibling and I have just two children. For for all those families out that have three or more children...Happy Middle Child Day :)

August 11th

On August 11, 1984, just before his regular Saturday radio address, President Ronald Reagan was doing a voice test with the microphone. He thought the microphone and the feed was not live. He joked into the microphone: "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes." To his surprise, he was speaking to a live feed!

So today is Presidential Joke Day!

Tutorial: Paper Chandelier

I created this project while I was designing a bridal shower. We used 5 pop-up tents for shade in the garden party and I wanted the tents to have a little more purpose. So I made these hanging chandeliers from paper.

What you will need:
Embroidery Hoops - Large and Small sizes
Ribbon
Scrapbooking Card Stock Paper, any colors you would like
Round Hole Punch
Hot Glue Gun
Sewing Machine

Expect about an 45 minutes to an hour to punch out the circles and another 45 minutes to an hour to sew and assemble the chandeliers.

I started by painting all of my hoops, because this was for a bridal shower I wanted them to be white

While the hoops were drying, I started punching the paper

I sewed through the center of each circle, butting them right up next to eachother

To create the angled effect, sew the first line with 25 dots, the second line with 24 dots, the third with 23..etc. Until you have enough rows sewn to glue around the entire hoop. I found it easier to sew a line and glue it right then.

Try to keep the thread right in the center of each circle

with the ribbon and hot clue, make the chandelier skeleton, as well has four pieces connecting at the top to hang it from

Start glueing the rows. I made a pattern with row - single - row - single-etc to space them out.

The top circle is finished

Repeat the same thing with the center hoop

I used a zip tie and an S-Hook to hang the hoops from the top of the tents.

I did 2 with blue centers and 2 with orange centers to coordinate with the wedding colors
